Protect Yourself and Your Family Against Mosquitoes and West Nile Virus

With the recent announcement of the first two human cases of West Nile virus here in Bernalillo County this year, it’s essential to protect yourself and your family against mosquito bites which cause the virus. All residents are encouraged to use insect repellent with proven, effective ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, permethrin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, limiting exposure to mosquitoes by avoiding outdoor activities at dawn and dusk, and eliminating sources of standing water on your property, which is where mosquitoes lay their eggs. Vote411.org, the League of Women Voters online voter guide, is now live!  There are brief descriptions of the offices, candidates’ photos, contact information, and their answers to questions on issues.  Go to the Vote411   website,  enter your street address, and you can view information on voting in New Mexico, find your polling place and view your personal election ballot linked to your street address/geographic area.

By October 1, 2024, The Voter Guide (the hard copy version of the online Vote411.org) for Bernalillo, Sandoval, Valencia and Torrance Counties elections on November 5  will be available for distribution at over 50 community locations across the 4 county area.

Updates from APD Foodhills Command

In August, 2024, there several ongoing operations in the Northeast Area Command designed to enhance safety and security in our community. First, we are actively addressing issues related to speeding and racing activity in our area. Our officers are conducting targeted operations to curb these dangerous behaviors and ensure that our roads remain safe for all users.  Additionally there is an increased presence of our bike officers on local trails, such as the Embudo Trail and along the diversion channels. These officers are dedicated to patrolling these areas to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all who use them.

Now that school has started please remember to drive slowly at all school crosswalks. We want our students to get to school safely.  Please SLOW DOWN for students and pay attention to the crossing guards !

Foothills APD CPC (Community Policing Council) Meetings — Second Mondays

The Community Policing Council’s goal is to engage in candid, detailed and meaningful dialogue between the Albuquerque Police and the citizens they serve.   Participants are asked to make recommendations and identify concerns, problems, successes and opportunities within each area command and for the department as a whole.  Regular participants include APD Foothills Commander Shawn Garrett and his staff. Commander Garrett provides monthly statistics for burglaries, auto theft, and other calls for service for our area.

Free Senior Lunch Options

The City of Albuquerque Dept of Senior Affairs continues to serve Senior lunches for persons 60 yrs and older. Lunches are distributed between 11:30 am – 1 pm, Monday – Friday and are available at local Senior and Multigenerational Centers — including Bear Canyon Sr Center.  Seniors must make reservations for their free lunch with the Senior Center 24 hours in advance.  Contact https://www.cabq.gov/seniors/senior-services/senior-meals.

City of Albuquerque Constructive Conversations Report

In Spring 2024, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller and City Councilors met for “Constructive Conversations,” a series of community meetings fostering dialogue between residents and city leaders to shape the future of the built environment in Albuquerque.  The series featured nine sessions  in each Council district across Albuquerque.
